Allée Couverte
Caurel, Côte du Nord

From Mur-de-Bretagne head west on the N164 and take the left turn after about 1km to Caurel and the lake. After about 0.5km look for a right turn that is signed to the tomb that goes under the main road. Follow the signs up the lane and you will come to a sign pointing into the woods. There is some space on the verge to park. Follow the path through the trees for a few hundred metres and you will come to the site.

This tomb has a side entrance and the interesting feature is the porthole form that has been carved here. It is aligned ESE to WNW and the chamber is 11m long (almost 40ft) There are about 25 large thin slabs of schist that are the supporting stones but only two capstones remain.

The entrance is near the SW end of the chamber and where two side stones almost touch the lower sections of the join have been carved away to create a narrow entrance hole. Beside this are two large stones (2m) at right angles that appear to be portal stones.

The entrance

The other curious thing about this site is that an elaborate stone arch has been built over the end of the chamber. The sides of this structure are in steps and a huge amount of effort has gone into building it. Perhaps it once had a cross on top as another way of “Christianising” the monument.
