Porthmeor Circle
Stone Circle?
SW 444 366

The circle lies on moorland not far from the road that leads from Porthmeor to Penzance. It is not far from the turn off from the coast road and you can park at the road side. Look out for the one tall stone on your right. On the map it is marked as a Tumuli.

This poorly defined circle is about 34m diameter and is made up of a number of stones, many of them standing. On the day we visited there had just been a fire and the gorse was burned down and still warm in places, so the stones were easy to see. When the gorse is high not a lot could probably be seen of this site.

We counted about 17 stones but the site seems very disturbed. One stone stands taller than the rest at about 1.1m, the others are about 0.7m or lower. The most complete section is to the west where a second small ring of stones touches the arc of the main circle. This ring is about 4m across and several small stones remain around it’s circumference.

This circle is of uncertain status, the 1908 OS map recorded it as a circle, it has been thought to be a henge (there is some bank visible) and also as a ring cairn, some even think it is a more modern construction.
