Stripple Stones
Stone Circle/Henge
SX144 752

From the Trippet Stones the circle is about a mile to the east just over the side of the hill. We asked at Hawkstor Farm and the farmer showed us a route through his fields as there is no public access from here and his sheep were lambing so no dogs at this time of year.

This is a circle-henge of once 28 stones in a 45m diameter circle and the only circle henge in the SW peninsula dating back some 5000 years. We counted 13 stones (and a possible two others) of which only four are now standing. This is probably due to being originally erected in very shallow holes no more than 50cm deep and the stones are up to 1.8m high. One of the remaining standing stones is leaning and erosion caused by cattle is clear to see.

Near the centre of the circle is a fallen pillar 3.7m (12 feet) long and in the past this has been split by drilling as the holes are clear to see. It is not central to the circle and several postholes near it have been located suggesting trial positions for it.

The circle stands in the centre of a henge about 68m diameter. Sadly this site is very damaged, when it was first recorded in 1879 it was already in a state of ruin with a field wall built through it that has since been removed. Some of the missing stones can be located in another nearby wall.
