Caulside Burn
Stone Circle
NX 529571    Kirkcudbrightshire

This circle is about 1.5 miles NE from the Claughreid circle. To reach it head back to the last gate and head NE with the aerials on Cambret Hill to your left and the peak of Cairnharrow to your right. It seemed quite a long, wet walk to reach this site as there is no path and the land is boggy with a couple of obstructions like walls and fences. For some parts there are tracks but eventually you will see the cairn.

The cairn beside the northern arc of the circle

The stone circle is approximately 24.0m diameter, formed by ten thin sandstone slabs and the stumps of a few others remaining from a possible 20. Most of the southern arc is missing. These slabs are set with their broad faces in the line of the circumference. The tallest stone is 4' (1.2m) high by 3' (1m) wide, but none of the others is more than 2' (0.6m) above the ground.

Immediately to the NNW is a cairn with a ruined cist on the top

About 150m further in the same direction with two small stones in a line between is a ring cairn with another cist and capstone. The ring mound surrounding the cairn is still visible and is about 12m diameter.

Just over the stream to the NW is a slab with a large carved spiral. Once over the stream you will see some boulders on the hillside. The carving is on the boulder to the right, not the largest, and the flat carved surface faces the circle.

We kept to this side of the stream for most of the way back as there seemed to be a track for most of the way.
