Torhousekie
Stone Circle
NX 382 564  Wigtownshire

This circle is beside the B733 3.5 miles west of Wigtown. There is a small parking space beside the circle that is reached by a gate. While we were here it was raining heavily and blowing a gale so rain got on the lens. After an hour the rain didn’t stop.

This flattened circle is on a slightly raised platform, measuring 21.4m x 20m, consists of 19 granite boulders. At the centre there is a row of three stones (two larger and one smaller between them) aligned NE to SW. This setting is unique, the two outer boulders are just over 1m high with the central “recumbent” lower. The circle boulders are graded in height from 0.6m to 1.4m towards the SE.

The centre setting

Burl writes that in the wall 18m east of the circle is a stone with a deeply carved hollow. After a very wet search I couldn’t find it.

The row of three boulders to the east

However not far to the south of the circle there is a single standing stone and about 100m to the east across the road is a row of three boulders. There are several other standing stones and cairns nearby, certainly an area worth exploring, preferably in dry weather.
