The
site is 2.5 miles NW of Dumfries just off the A76. Take the left turn at
Newbridge just after a campsite on the right on the B729 and the circle
will be seen in an open field on the left just before a junction. No
parking spaces but there is a grassy area at the junction. Walk down the
lane to a stile.
The Twelve Apostles from the road
|
||
| With
its maximum diameter of 86m the Twelve Apostles is the 7th largest stone
circle in Great Britain. It is cut in two by traces of a field boundary. Until 1837 there were twelve stones out of a probable 18, but now only eleven of them survive, five are still standing. Four of the boulders are of local stone, the rest carried from two miles away. The tallest upright stone is 1.9m high, but the largest block is a slab 3.2m long and 2.3m wide lying in the SW. Many white quartz pebbles were found within the circle. Several stones have quartz veins running through them and several are a conglomerate with quartz pebbles in them. Many stones are pitted with what appears natural erosion, but some are in rows and on various faces of the stones.
