Ardgroom Heading towards Ardgroom from Lauragh, just before you reach the town there is a sign to the circle leading you to a lane on the left. Take this lane then turn on the first left (signs removed here) and drive for about half a mile to a parking space. A new sign to the circle is on this lane but if this goes missing look for a track with some concrete slabs leading to a stile. You can see the circle from the lane.
This is another attractive circle with tall thin stones reaching about 2 metres in height at the portals. There is an outlier that is around 2.5 metres high. There are signs of an old wall running through the circle to the outlier that might date back to the neolithisc period. To the east is a raised area that might be a cairn. The circle is about 7.2 metres diameter and consists of 9 standing stones and 2 fallen. There could be some missing ones.
We tried to reach the second Ardgroom circle near the Kerry border but at the nearest house to the site when I asked permission to cross a field I was told we couldn’t as it was private land. |
