Caranish Stone Circle NF 832 603 The main road runs straight through this circle, it is unfenced and so access is easy. On the A865 in the southern part of North Uist after passing through the village of Caranish carry on to after the road bends and heads uphill. The circle is on the top of the hill on both sides of the road. There is a layby just before the top on the right or room to get on the edge of the road over the crest of the hill.
Only one stone stands here to the southwest but there are several large stones laying and leaning around the circumference to the northeast. On the northern arc are three leaning stones ranging from 1 to 1.2m and a larger fallen slab about 1.4m long. |

The
circle appears to be around 35-38m diameter. The standing stone on the
south side of the road has two other stones piled beside it, possibly when
the road was built. These are about 1m high and there are a couple of
other possible circle stones nearer to the road. |
