Harris is
mostly mountain and rock and contains some of the most unspoilt wilderness
in the country. It gets its name from the Norse words “Na Hearadh”
that means High Island. There are only a few megalithic sites here such as
the standing stones and cupmarks around Horgabost and Borve, both on the
southwest coast. These sites listed here follow the A859 around the island
from Tarbert to Leverburgh on the west coast. A handy space to camp is
among the sand dunes at Horgabost beach. You can make a donation at the
first house on the right (by the old BP sign) for camping fees.
