Lewis constitutes the northern two thirds of the most northerly island in
the Outer Hebrides. Harris is to the south. Most of the prehistoric sites
are on the west coast, notably the Callanish sites as well as Scotland’s
tallest standing stone. The interior of the island is mostly peat bog so
many more sites might exist
yet to be found by peat cutters.
The Druim Dubh circle
was found as recently as 1992 not far from the
main road to Stornoway. Lewis gets its name from the Gaelic word for
marshy. Bring wellies.
