For a couple of weeks in July 2006 we travelled around the Aberdeenshire area and visited the following sites:
Several we had planned to see were not accessible as fields were in crop and there were no routes to the circles, others were simply blocked with barbed wire and in one case the road was closed. We also saw a few Pictish stones at Inveruie and north near Forres.

Tomnaverie Take the B9094 at Aboyne on the A93 and head north for about 4 miles. The circle is signed and there is a small car park. The circle is a short walk from the road. As we were camping in Tarland we went on the 4km circular walk from near the campsite that goes to the circle then on into Drummy Wood where there is evidence of ancient hut circles, cairns and field systems.
The circle is on a hilltop very close to old quarry workings which in fact almost destroyed the site until it was put in state care in the 1920s as many stones had fallen into the quarry and the rest were about to follow. The site was constructed in two stages, the first was a low platform on the hill crest and at a later stage this was enclosed by a ring of stones.
To the SW is a large recumbent stone flanked by two tall pillars.
The circle was restored following excavations in 1999 and 2000 when stones were replaced in their original sockets. Now 11 of the original 12 stones are standing. Inside the ring there are also several small ring cairns and cremation pits.
The locals were friendly on the walk to Drummy wood. |
