There seem to be very few megalithic sites in Cheshire, so far we have only found one, The Bridestones, near Congleton. Even this being in Cheshire is slightly in doubt as the OS map marks the site just inside Staffordshire even though the trees it is beside are in Cheshire with a wall apparently being the boundary.
From Congleton take the A527 towards Biddulph and just after Congleton railway station look for a crossroads sign in ¼ mile. Turn left here towards Leek and after about 2 miles you will see some trees on the left and the chamber is just in them. Stop by a drive on the left and park on the grass verge, there is no parking space.
Entrance to the site Walk up the drive on a
public right of way to the chamber. It is made clear where the private
property starts. This is an impressive site. The chamber is built from
large sandstone slabs and the two portal stones are over 10 feet (3 metres)
tall. It was constructed on an east/west line and has a double chamber
measuring around 15x5 feet (4.5x1.5 metres) with the stones on the sides
at around 4 feet (1.2 metres) high. The stones have been shaped to fit
accurately and it is a good example of Neolithic engineering. There is a
fallen stone by the site entrance and one separate 3 foot (1 metre) high
standing stone nearby.
View from the East It is an attractive location even if it is somewhat cramped with walls and private property around it and the continuous barking of a Rottweiller guarding his end of the drive doesn’t help. However it’s well worth a visit even if it is off the megalithic monuments beaten track.
