Take the B6265 to
Threshfield from Skipton and carry on ahead on the B6160. At this junction
there is a small church on the right, continue for a couple of hundred
metres and take the first left turn into Shirethorns. Continue past a
quarry entrance and a caravan site up this narrow lane until you reach a
gate across the lane in about 2 miles. The circle is ahead on the left of
the wall here. The gate to this field was padlocked shut and some wire has
been added to the top of the wall to make access difficult.
Druid’s Altar The circle sits raised
up on a circular mound which is about 40 feet (12 metres) across. It
consists of four stones, a Four-Poster, of local white limestone. Only
three of the four remain standing and one of these is leaning badly. The
circle is about 16 feet (4.8 metres) across and the tallest stone is to
the southeast at just over 1 metre in height. On this side of the mound
there are several smaller stones visible.
