From Cockermouth
head east on the A66 and after about 1½ miles turn left towards
Lambcot and continue over the crossroads then on uphill for about ½ mile
to a junction. Turn right here. A new access route to this site has been
made. Continue past the farm lane on the left and go for about ¼ mile
until you see a gate on the left with a small green footpath symbol on it.
(This is just before the road starts going downhill) Park on the verge and
go through the gate. Head uphill and to the left and on the top look for a
stile in the left hand corner. Go over this stile, the mud was waist deep
here on dogs and over human ankles! Head diagonally uphill and to the left
to another stile which you cross to the circle. It was starting to snow
when these not so good photos were taken.
Elva Plain There are 15 stones remaining in the circle which is about 35 metres in diameter but many are missing. The tallest is around 1 metre high and is to the west but most are quite small and almost hidden. Most of the stones are to the south in an arc and originally an outlier was in the south east on the line of the midwinter sunset.
