Four Stones
Stone Circle
SO 245 607

This circle is just to the east of New Radnor on the A44 and is marked by this name on the OS map. At the crossroads for Knapp Farm turn left and the site is to the left of the lane just opposite building before the first junction.

View from the lane

This is a good example of a Four Poster except that it is not in Scotland. The stones are volcanic in origin carried probably from a site 2 miles away. The stones are unlike the Scottish Four Posters in that they stand around the circumference of a 5.3m (17ft) circle and are not on the corners of a perfect rectangle.

The heights range from 1.4 to 1.8m (4.5 to 6ft) and the heaviest is about 6 tons.

On the top of the SW stone are three possible cupmarks.

The cupmarked stone mentioned in Burl was not so easy to find at Llanerch Farm. We walked up to the farm and spoke to the owner who knew nothing of the stone and had lived there more than 30 years. He said every two years or so somebody came looking for it but nobody had found anything.
Has anyone seen it?
