Midwinter sunrise at Sellafield

Midwinter sunrise at St Bees campsite

We found a campsite open all year at St Bees.

A footpath runs from the bridge near Seascale Hall to the beach passing near to the circle. This was a very disappointing visit as access seems almost impossible. BNFL have added extra restrictions so you cannot park on the road or verges even. From Gosforth take the road to Seascale and turn right towards Calder and the BNFL plant at the crossroads. Park in the right turn before the footpath signs that leads to Seascale Hall and walk to the bridge where a footpath crosses the road. The view from the barbed wire fence is not so good and the circle seems overgrown and neglected. It might be possible to ask permission at the farm to get closer but with all the nuclear power, smoke and restrictions we decided to head to more tranquil areas.

This stone circle is almost in the shadow of Sellafield nuclear power station. It is not easy to get to as it is in the middle of a field of grass on private land. The site is about ½ mile from the coast. There are ten stones all just over 1 metre high among overgrown weeds.
