Cefn Caer Euni
Kerb Circle and Ring Cairn
SH 993 410

This is a very pleasant site to visit in good weather. It is not marked on the OS map and it is thanks to Frances Lynch’s excellent book on the monuments of Gwynedd (ISBN 0117015741) From Bala take the A494 NE and turn left at Bethel. Continue for about 2 miles and bear left then at the crossroads by the phone box turn sharp left. This is signed to Soar. Continue straight on to the No through road and drive until you reach a cattle grid where there is room to turn round. Drive back a short distance to a gate on the left and park. Go through the gate and walk uphill along the side of a fence SE for about ½ mile where you will come to the circles.

The kerb circle

The larger circle is the kerb circle and the smaller is the ring cairn. The kerb circle consists of a ring of 19 boulders none larger than 2.5ft (0.7m) and is about 12m diameter. On the southern edge four small stones form a portal about 5ft (1.5m) wide.

The ring cairn is quite small and many of the stones have been removed. It was originally constructed in the form of three concentric rings of small boulders that surround an open centre about 3m across. The total width is about 8m and it is possible to make out the rings in the heather. In the centre is the tip of a pointed stone that is a natural feature and the rings were built around this.

The ring cairn

A very pleasant site but not always so as Frances Lynch points out that the larger ring was used as a cockpit in the 18th century when cock fighting was popular in the area.
