Stone Circle
NY 566 134

This can be seen from the A6 just south of Shap opposite the Corus factory. You can’t miss this as it pours smoke out that can be seen for miles. There is no parking except on the verge or further on in a car sales forecourt further on. The field gate was not locked so access is easy as it is just a few yards from the road.

There are six remaining granite boulders on the west of the railway line. The rest were lost when the line was built as it cuts right through the centre of the circle. There was said to be a stone row leading to this site and several standing stones remain in the area. Many are called Thunderstones on the map and one is called the Goggleby Stone on a footpath in a field just west of Shap at NY 558 152. Another leaning stone is visible from here in the next field as well as others at NY 552 157 and NY 591 155.
