Circle For Swinside take the
A595 and about 2 miles after crossing the narrow Duddon Bridge look for a
sharp right turn signed Broadgate. Follow this lane through the village
and carry on to where it meets a farm road on the left which has a sign to
the stone circle. The only parking space we saw was to go back a little to
a field gate on now your right once turned where maybe three cars can fit.
Don’t block the gate as a tractor went through while we were there. Walk
uphill until Swinside Farm comes into view and you will see the circle on
your right over a wall. A gate leads to it and there are also stepping
stones in the wall further up where you can get an elevated position which
is useful for photographs.
Track to the circle It is best to ask permission at the farmhouse before going in the field. (Note – if you have educationally challenged dogs like ours, the fields are full of sheep!)
Swinside circle looking to the southeast This is a very well preserved circle in a beautiful tranquil setting and there are about 55 stones remaining. The tallest is almost 8ft (2.4 metres) and several are placed close together to form around a 90 foot ring. To the south east is an entrance with double stones which faces down the valley towards the midsummer sunrise.
