Lake District Swinside

Return to the
crossroads leading back to Little Salkeld and turn left. Go for ½ mile
passing a couple of buildings then when you reach trees on the left look
for a gap between them where there is a gate. Park on the verge. The
circle is against the hedgerow about 200 metres into the edge of the
field.
Little Meg This is a small kerb
circle about 20 feet (6 metres) across. Beside the tallest stone which is
about 3½ feet (1.1 metres) tall there is a low slab with two large spiral
carvings on it.
Little Meg spiral carvings These carvings are fairly faint but can be seen. Another carved stone from this site was removed and put in the Tullie House museum in Carlisle.

From Little Meg
continue up the road and turn left to the village of Glassonby where you
then turn left towards Kirkoswale. Just after ½ mile the circle can be
seen in a field to the right. Park by the gate on the verge. The circle is
a couple of hundred yards into the field towards the trees.
Glassonby circle This site has been disturbed but many stones remain, some touching, around the low cairn. There is reported to be a carved stone here but we couldn’t find it. Many of the stones had been covered in sheep feed and straw though but cleaning this off didn’t reveal much. One carved stone with cupmarks has been removed in the past.
