You will need more than a weekend to visit this area so this section will be updated in the future. With a lot of the footpaths opening again it is a good time to visit as the narrow lanes are not too busy. Coming from Caernarfon the first stones you will come across will be a modern stone circle on the roundabout on the A487 about 1 mile south of town.

Caernarfon
Modern Stone Circle
SH 483 618

This small circle consists of 7 standing stones and 2 or 3 fallen ones covered in ivy (possibly caused by a car or artistic licence?) They are about 5 feet (1.5m) high and made of slate. There is a small parking space near the hospital entrance on the no through road exit from the roundabout where you can stop to get a closer look. (There are more photos of this on the Modern Circles pages on this site)

Follow the A487 then take the A499 towards Pwllheli, then the B4417 towards Aberdaron passing a couple of sites mentioned on the Beddgelert pages. The first place we thought would be interesting was to see a “cupmarked stone” but had some doubts when we got there.

Penllech
Cupmarked Stone
SH 222 344

Take the second right just a mile or so south west of Tudweilog. Go to the second farm at Penllech and ask to see the cupmarked stone and the farmer will direst you back to the first galvanised gate just before the bend in the lane. The gate has one new concrete gatepost, the old one is nearby a few metres in the field and we couldn’t see cupmarks on it. Anyway it is listed on the CARN database and the farmer certainly knew about it!

Coetan Arthur
Burial Chamber
SH 229 345

Return to the road and turn left and take the first right. After about ½ mile stop near the footpath sign and you will see the tomb in the field uphill on the right. There is little space to park here. The chamber has a large capstone about 10 by 5 feet (3 x 1.5m) which is held up on three remaining stones with one fallen beside it. There also appears to be a second capstone lying beside it, possibly a second tomb.

Sarn Meyllteyrn Churchyard
Standing Stone
SH 237 328

Continue down the lane towards Sarn Meyllteyrn and stop before you reach the junction. The stone or church are not marked on the OS map as the church was partially demolished. Watch carefully for the entrance where you will see a small stone wall and metal gates leading to the churchyard and can stop here. (Room for one vehicle only). The 10 ft (3m) high slender standing stone can be seen in front of the remains of the church among the graves where there are pleasant views.
