We were heading for Pembrokeshire so visited a couple of sites in Mid Wales on the way. Most of the circles near Brecon are out of bounds still due to Foot and Mouth restrictions.

Ysbyty Cynfyn
Stone Circle
SN 752 791

Just over a mile south of Ponterwyd on the road to Devil’s Bridge there is a church on the right. Look for a footpath sign on the left of the road and some houses on the right. Park here in the space on the right and the church is set back from the road. The footpath leads to a pleasant walk to Parson’s Bridge but the first thing you will see is the large stone in the churchyard wall by the monkey puzzle tree. The church was built in the late 19th century.

The northern stone

There are five stones built into the circular raised bank that surrounds the church. The tall northern stone is 12ft (3.7m) high and the others are to the east. Two are built into the churchyard wall and the other two are either side of the gate, these were moved to form the gate posts. These four average around 5ft (1.5m) height.

The stones by the gate

We first did walks in this area over 20 years ago and the Arch Forest trails make for a pleasant hour or so nearby.

Hirnant Circle
Ring Cairn
SN 753 839

Coming from Ysbyty Cynfyn drive back to Ponterwyd and turn left on the A44 then take the first right in just a few metres. Head up this mountain lane and pass a small reservoir on the left. After about a mile further you cross a small bridge by a farm. Park by the next gate on the left up the hill from here. The ring cairn is about 150m west from here on a low mound in the corner of a field. The map shows there is a footpath to near the site but this isn’t clear from the gate.

The Ring Cairn

There are 16 small stones, the tallest being around 2ft (0.6m) in this small circle. It is built on a low mound and is about 5.5m diameter with several gaps, but most of the stones still stand. A short distance to the NE is a cairn.

Further up the road about ½ mile just before where the rocky gorge starts there is a 2nd ring cairn with about 12 stones visible. This is about 250m to the west of the lane and on the other side of the stream and several fences. There is no access to the site as the fields are marked private.
