Cop
Stone From Mayburgh Henge
continue on the road that crosses the motorway and take a left turn signed
Askham after about ¾ mile. Continue through Askham straight on to Helton
and as you reach the village take the right turn up a narrow lane. After
passing a couple of farms you will come out on the moors, look for a
footpath sign pointing both ways across the lane. Park here and you will
see the Cop Stone ahead to the northwest on the horizon. The sign post
point to Pooley Bridge here.
The Cop Stone The Cop Stone is about
5 feet (1.5 metres) high and is leaning. From this point there is almost a
line between two boulders ahead to the northwest through a cairn circle
and another cairn. Follow this route rather than the well worn footpath.

Another view of the cairn circle This is raised on a small mound and has a deep depression in the centre. The circle consists of around 10 stones from 1 to 4 feet in height with many smaller stones between. The largest is a pointed stone to the west and another smaller pointed one to the east. It is in an area of many shallow holes called shake holes. |
