Rollright Stones
Stone Circle
SP 296 309

From Banbury take the A361 towards Chipping Norton. Turn right on the A3400 and after about 2 miles turn left at the 2nd staggered crossroad signed Little Rollright. Watch for a layby on the left and the circle is in the trees behind it. Dogs are not allowed in the circle but can be tied in the trees.

This is a perfect circle measuring 31.7m (104ft) across. Originally there were 80 stones almost touching except for the entrance in the SE which was formed by 2 portals, we counted 70 stones. The stones are well weathered limestone with a very gnarled appearance and several have naturally weathered holes through them.

The King Stone

70m to the NNE of the circle is the King Stone which is just over the road in a field. This is a 2.5m limestone slab surrounded by a metal fence.

The Whispering Knights

About 350m ESE are the remains of a tomb called the Whispering Knights. Walk NE back down the lane and it is reached through the third gate on the right where a gap provides access to a path along the hedgerow. Keep to the path to reach the site. Five large slabs remain of the chamber facing the SE. Four are standing and one, which appears to be part of a capstone, has fallen. This is also surrounded by a metal fence.
