Scorhill
Stone Circle
SX 654 873
From Spinster’s Rock return to the crossroads over the A382 and go across. Follow the narrow lanes to Batworthy. When you cross the narrow bridge don’t take the right turn signed No Through Road as the road you think the map shows as a short cut is a non-driveable track! Instead head for Thorn and keep on until you reach Batworthy Farm. Park in the space by the bridge. Walk SW along the wall and trees and at the end of the trees you can either turn south to the multiple rows of Shovel Down or turn NW and follow the wall and trees to the river for Scorhill circle. You have to cross two rivers by stone clapper bridges but when we were there it was raining heavily a lot of the time and the bog between the rivers was almost 3ft deep in parts. Ahead and uphill you will see the circle.

A fading rainbow as we approached the circle

The circle is in quite a dramatic setting, certainly enhanced when we were there with a rainbow leading to it and heavy clouds with the sun bursting through. This did make the exposure of the photos a touch difficult.

There are 24 standing stones and another 10 or so fallen in this circle. The tallest is about 2.5m and the circle is 27m diameter. There are many gaps and it is thought that originally there were about 65 to 70 stones.
