Machrie Moor Stone Circles

Machrie Moor 1
Stone Circle
NR 912 324

A short distance to the southeast is circle 1.

Originally there was a timber circle here which was replaced by this ring of originally 12 stones. 11 remain and has alternately set granite boulders and sandstone slabs. This is an ellipse measuring around 14.5 by 13 metres.

Just to the northeast is the recently discovered circle that had sunk in the peat with only the tips of the stones showing. This had also been the site of an earlier timber circle and excavations have restored the site and raised the stones to reveal a neat circle of 10 stones, nine being sandstone and one granite.

The ruined four poster ¾ mile to the east was not accessible from this site as you are not allowed to cross fields at the moment but we couldn’t reach it from the road either. The site at NR 924 322 north of Ballymichael has no parking space or verge and there is no gap in the wire or gate to get through. Using binoculars and risking passing traffic we could see a pile of stones in the corner of the wood in the distance.
