This
could be a hard one to find. We couldn’t see a track heading east from
Auchagallon as mentioned in Burl’s book and at present you are not
allowed to cross fields so we tried another way. Follow the minor road
that carries on over the island to Brodick for about a mile and after
passing a couple of buildings look for a wide opening with a grassy track
on the left at NR 905 337. This track leads on gently uphill to the woods.
The gate where the woods start has a rusty padlock but it is not locked.
(We asked a man with a shotgun if it was ok to go on this track) Carry on
for about a mile and when the track bends to the left and starts to go
downhill look on the right of the path for a bracken covered raised area
ahead. The bracken was about 4ft high in July and the stones are 2ft so it
could be hard to find. Climb up the bank and make your own path to the
higher ground and you will find a small Four Poster. (The picture in
Burl’s book must have been in winter)
The low stones form a rectangle of about 11ft by 9ft (3.3x2.8m) and are about 2ft high.
It
is a very pleasant walk in the summer through the woods that were full of
foxgloves and we saw plenty of deer footprints but didn’t see the deer.
