We drove on to Oban to find the other site in Argyllshire before heading towards Inverness.

Strontoiller
Stone Circle
NM 906 291

Entering Oban from the south keep on the main road until you see a church on the right where the right turn is signed Golf Course and Rare Breeds Farm. Take this turn and continue for about 2 miles passing the farm. Turn right at the junction then take the next left into a narrow lane for about a mile. You will see the huge standing stone ahead on the left.

Standing stone and kerb cairn

At this site is a stone circle, standing stone and a kerb cairn all in the same field. The standing stone is very impressive at over 4 metres tall and stands right beside the small kerb cairn next to the lane. The cairn is about 5 metres across and from the road you can see about 6 boulders around it. The grass was very long and there was barbed wire preventing access.

The stone circle is best seen from the farm lane a little back up the lane from the standing stone. We could see very few of the 31 granite boulders here as the grass was long and only a few stood out above it. We couldn’t see a gate to the field and as livestock were there we couldn’t get closer.
