The Sanctuary Stone Circle SU 118 679 From Avebury take the minor road that follows the line of the West Kennet Avenue, the B4003, and at the junction with the A4 turn left. After about ½ mile there is a layby on the right and a gate to the site. The stones of the avenue would have led to this once double stone circle originally. The site was known as Seven Barrow Hill because of the nearby barrows that can still be seen.
Nothing remains on the site and all the stones have been removed. Concrete blocks have been positioned indicating the stone positions and concrete posts mark the post holes of a wooden structure believed to have been mortuary houses. The stone circles were 14m and 40m diameter.

Silbury
Hill From the Sanctuary head west on the A4 and you will first come to a parking area to visit West Kennet Longbarrow then one for Silbury Hill. Unfortunately it was getting dark and we couldn’t visit the barrow this time as we were going to be camping near Stonehenge this night and had run out of time.
Silbury Hill Silbury Hill is the largest manmade mound in Europe and stands 39.5m (130ft) high. It has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest so you are not allowed on it. It has been calculated that 8.75 million cubic feet of chalk and soil were quarried and carried to form the mound and would have taken 700 men 10 years to build it making it one of the most labour intensive sites in prehistoric Europe.
