Twelve Apostles Stone Circle SE 126 451 There are several
routes to reach this site but as we were coming from the south (getting
badly lost trying to find Bingley) we decided to try and park along the
road that runs east/west along the south of Ilkley Moor. This turned out
to be not a good idea as there are no parking spaces on this quite fast
road. We eventually parked by a road works near the pub at SE 125 422
where the Dales Way footpath heads north towards the circle. There is a
small layby further on but it wasn’t safe to walk dogs, or humans, along
this road. After walking steadily gently uphill for just over 2 miles you
will come to the site beside the path in a clearing in the heather. There
are pleasant views all the way but there was a freezing wind blowing
(mid-February)
View from the west The circle is in a
lovely setting and is well worth the walk. There used to be up to twenty
stones here but only twelve remain. These are millstone grit and are
slab-like in shape.
It is about 50 feet (15
metres) diameter from east to west and just a little less from north to
south. The largest stones are about 4 feet (1.2 metres) in the ENE, a
little lower in the west and there is a 3 feet (1 metre) high pointed
stone in the south. There is a slight hollow in the centre but the site
has been eroded as the path diverts through the centre.
Views
to the north Bradup Follow the road heading
east/west along the southern edge of Ilkley Moor and turn right at the
crossroads towards East Morton. Drive on through West Morton and turn
right at the next crossroads. After about ½ mile stop a little beyond
some houses on the right at a layby near a footpath sign pointing left.
Cross the stile made from railway sleepers and go on through a metal gate.
Turn right here and follow the wire fence about 100 metres and you will
come to the remains of the circle in the heather.
View of the ruined circle There are six quite large stones remaining here but most have fallen and there are several others scattered around. It is hard to determine the original form as many were removed from the site. |
