The park is only 32 km from the capital along the Harare-Bulawayo road. There is a signed left turn just after the Manyame River bridge. At the next junction turn right where there is a very rusty sign directing you to the park gates on a rough track. The rock art is a few kilometres inside the park by the lake shore at Bushman point. The game park trails are well signed once inside and there was a surprisingly large number of animals easily seen including giraffe, zebra, impala, kudu, waterbuck, ostrich, eland, sable and baboon.
The rock outcrop at Bushman Point At Bushman Point you park and follow a sign to a trail along the rocky lake shore to the rocks where the paintings are. Most of the site is in excellent condition considering the age but nearer the exposed faces of the rock you can see slight traces of eroded artwork.
Views of the rock art
There are many
sites of rock art in a zone stretching from the South African Cape to the
border between Zimbabwe and Zambia formed by the Zambezi River. The rock
painting of this region is characterized by very detailed and complex
techniques of shading. Engravings are also found in this zone. At Bushman
point the main theme of the art appears to be scenes of hunting and
everyday life rather than the shamanistic rituals depicted on many rocks
in other sites. |

Our other highlight was seeing a white
rhino with a baby just about half a kilometre from where we had walked to
the rock art site. This is a peaceful game park with abundant animals which
was quite a surprise considering it is so close to Harare. It does get
busier at the weekends when people come to the lake to fish. |
